{"id":885,"date":"2018-10-27T12:16:04","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T12:16:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/?p=885"},"modified":"2018-10-27T12:16:04","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T12:16:04","slug":"mobilizing-help-fight-voter-suppression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2018\/10\/27\/mobilizing-help-fight-voter-suppression\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobilizing to help fight voter suppression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-888\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/10\/voting-rights-are-human-rights.jpg\" alt=\"People carrying signs saying &quot;Voing Rights are Human Rights&quot;\" width=\"1009\" height=\"647\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With only ten days before Election Day, it&#8217;s clear that a lot of races will come down to whose votes get counted.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tribes-scramble-to-meet-voter-id-requirements-in-north-dakota\/\">New ID requirements for Native Americans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansas.com\/news\/politics-government\/article220557195.html\">moving the only polling place in Dodge City to the outskirts of town<\/a> (a mile away from any public transportation) and then sending new voters the wrong address, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/politics\/texas\/article\/Voting-machine-errors-changed-some-Texans-13339298.php\">voting machines changing votes in Texas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/10\/25\/18010928\/2018-midterm-elections-voting-rights-purges\">voter purges<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gpbnews.org\/post\/update-who-are-75000-people-georgia-s-pending-list\">&#8220;pending&#8221; lists<\/a> &#8230; hey wait a second, I&#8217;m noticing a pattern here.<\/p>\n<p>Voter suppression &#8211; largely directed against Black, Native American, Latinx, and student voters &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/feature\/todays-voter-suppression-tactics-have-a-150-year-history\"> has long been one of the major tools the right wing uses to stay in power in the US<\/a>.\u00a0 2018 is no exception.\u00a0 The Texas, Florida, North Dakota, Nevada, and Tennessee Senate races may well be decided by voter suppression; ditto for the Georgia, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Florida Governor races, and hundreds of other federal, state and local elections.<\/p>\n<p>Fortuantely, all across the country, people are fighting back &#8211; with legal challenges, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsmaven.io\/indiancountrytoday\/news\/in-wake-of-new-voter-id-law-mad-rush-to-repair-native-voting-woes-in-n-dakota-OE6zHfTozku1PP-w16esWQ\/\">new IDs issued by Native American tribes<\/a>, phone and text hotlines backed by pro bono lawyers, educating people about their rights, and dozens of other ways.\u00a0 A lot of the people and organizations on the front lines have been doing this for years and know what tactics work.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s three things you can do to help.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Volunteer<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The non-partisan <a href=\"https:\/\/866ourvote.org\/\">Election Protection Coalition<\/a> makes it easy to <a href=\"https:\/\/protectthevote.net\/\">sign up as a poll monitor<\/a> &#8211; and if you &#8216;re a lawyer, paralegal, law student or other legal professional, you can help with their <a href=\"https:\/\/electionprotection.wetheaction.org\/\">voter assistance call site and field programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Many local groups also offer volunteering opportunities; try doing a web search for the name of your city or state and \u201cvoting rights organizations\u201d.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Help get the word out<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/know-your-rights\/what-do-when-faced-voter-intimidation\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-890\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/10\/aclu-voting-rights-300x300.png\" alt=\"Voter Intimidation is illegal and unlikel. But this is what it looks like - and what you can report.\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a>Many voter suppression techniques rely on intentionally confusing voters.\u00a0 One way that everybody can help counter this is to increase the chances that voters being targeted for suppression know their rights and have access to accurate information.\u00a0 For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Share the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/know-your-rights\/what-do-when-faced-voter-intimidation\">ACLU&#8217;s Know Your Rights information<\/a> widely.<\/li>\n<li>Let people know that there are hotlines in multiple langauges:\u00a0866-OUR-VOTE, 888-Ve-Y-Vota (from the NALEO Educational Fund), 844-Yalla-US, in Arabic and English (the Arab American Institute,),\u00a0 and 888-API-VOTE (APIAVote\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Asian Americans Advancing Justice-AAJC).<\/li>\n<li>If you know people in Georgia, remind them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvp.sos.ga.gov\/MVP\/mvp.do\">check their registration information<\/a> and that <a href=\"http:\/\/sos.ga.gov\/index.php\/general\/information_for_pending_voters\">they can still vote if they&#8217;re on the pending list<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you know people in Texas, let them know how important it is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easttexasmatters.com\/news\/local-news\/voting-machine-glitches-experts-urge-voters-to-double-check-ballots\/1553252498\">double-check that their votes have been recorded correctly<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you have trans and non-binary friends who are concerned about voting, let them know about <a href=\"https:\/\/transformthevote.org\/voting\">NCTE&#8217;s #VotingWhileTrans<\/a> page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More generally, if you hang out on Facebook or Twitter, you can also help by liking and commenting on posts and tweets with useful information about voting rights.\u00a0 The engagement a post or tweet gets, the more visibility the platforms give it.\u00a0 While the effect of just a single like or comment is relatively small, a few dozen people working together can really have an impact.<\/p>\n<p>And if you&#8217;ve got friends and acquiantances who care about the November election, try to get them involved as well.\u00a0\u00a0 Share some of the links here (or even this whole article) with them and ask them to help.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Donate<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Most of the groups involved here are grassroots organizations on a tiny budget; I&#8217;ve got a short list below. \u00a0If you&#8217;re looking to contribute to a potential &#8220;Blue Wave&#8221; in the election, this is one of the most leveraged places to put your money.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of excellent organizations working on this issue around the country &#8230; so many that it can be overwhelming.\u00a0 So here&#8217;s a short list of three well-respected organizations to use as a starting point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourdirectionsvote.com\/about\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fourdirectionsvote.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/logo1.png\" alt=\"Four Directions logo\" width=\"235\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourdirectionsvote.com\/about\/\"><strong>Four Directions<\/strong><\/a> works with Tribes in Nevada, Arizona, Montana, North Carolina, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota and focuses on full enfranchisement\u00a0as a crucial way to navigate a stronger future for Native communities.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourdirectionsvote.com\/donation\/\"><strong>Donate here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lawyerscommittee.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft \" src=\"https:\/\/lawyerscommittee.org\/wp-content\/themes\/lawyers-committee\/img\/lc-logo.svg\" alt=\"Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law\" width=\"342\" height=\"81\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lawyerscommittee.org\/\"><strong>Lawyer&#8217;s Committee for Civil Rights Under Law<\/strong><\/a> has long been one of the leaders in the fight for voting rights.\u00a0 As well as running the 866-OUR-VOTE hotline, they also get involved in legal issues before and after the election &#8211; for example, challenging Gwinnett County&#8217;s rejection of mailed-in ballots.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/lawyerscommittee.org\/make-a-donation\/\"><strong>Donate here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-887\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/10\/ldf-logo-300x145.png\" alt=\"LDF: Defend, Educate, Empower\" width=\"196\" height=\"95\" \/><\/a>The NAACP&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/\">Legal Defense Fund<\/a><\/strong> has lawyers and volunteers on the ground in Texas, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Louisiana, Missouri, and Florida.\u00a0 One high-profile case they&#8217;re involved in is working with students at Prairie View A&amp;M who are suing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/prairie-view-m-students-sue-texas-county-allege-voter-suppression-n924141\">Waller County in Texas<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/org2.salsalabs.com\/o\/6857\/p\/salsa\/donation\/common\/public\/?donate_page_KEY=15971&amp;track=DW19K1&amp;utm_source=fy19fallintegratedmodal&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=fy19fallintegrated\"><strong>Donate here<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreadthevote.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-895\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/10\/spread-the-vote-300x100.png\" alt=\"Spread the Vote\" width=\"300\" height=\"100\" \/><strong>Spread the vote<\/strong><\/a> helps eligible voters get government-issued photo IDs, responding to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/monkey-cage\/wp\/2017\/02\/15\/do-voter-identification-laws-suppress-minority-voting-yes-we-did-the-research\/?utm_term=.de1605ec008d\">one of the most severe forms of voter suppression<\/a>, and has chapters in Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia and Texas.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreadthevote.org\/donatestv\/\"><strong>Donate here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t by any means an exhaustive list.\u00a0 There are plenty of other organizations that do great work here and are also well worth supporting &#8211;
