Fact.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nicole Sanchez (@nmsanchez) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nmsanchez\/status\/988131250354372609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 22, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Hey wait a second, I&#8217;m noticing a pattern here &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">The <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/moments\/988069560921284608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/moments\/988069560921284608\">Moment by Shireen Mitchell<\/a> (aka @digitalsista) are both well worth listening to. \u00a0 Shireen&#8217;s been calling attention to this for a while, and this Moment weaves together various threads and articles.\u00a0 Nicole&#8217;s one of the leading voices for intersectional diversity, inclusion, justice, and equaity in the software industry, and the replies include her perspective as a Latinx woman as to why listening to black women is so important in this context.\u00a0Safiya Umoya Noble&#8217;s recent\u00a0<em>Wired\u00a0<\/em>article <a class=\"hoverable\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/social-inequality-will-not-be-solved-by-an-app\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/social-inequality-will-not-be-solved-by-an-app\/\">Social Inequality Will Not Be Solved By an App<\/a> is also well worth listening to, as is her outstanding book <em>Algorithms of Oppression.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But what I especially want to highlight in this post is the overall theme.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to Black women.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s good advice in the workplace.\u00a0 It&#8217;s good advice professionally &#8211; collaborating with (and listening to) Shireen, Tammarrian Rogers, and Lynn Cyrin helped me raise my game and took <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/a-change-is-coming\/diversity-friendly-software-at-sxsw-2017-references-c0ca05a191a6\">our work on diversity-friendly software<\/a> to a much higher level.\u00a0 It&#8217;s good advice in politics and activism.\u00a0 It&#8217;s good advice for protecting democracy.\u00a0 It&#8217;s good advice in general.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I&#8217;m far from the first person to say this.\u00a0 But a lot of white people, and a lot of guys, still act like they haven&#8217;t gotten the memo.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, this is one of those rare pieces of advice that it&#8217;s very easy to act on.\u00a0 Start by looking at your own behavior: are you hearing Black women&#8217;s voices?\u00a0 Are you really listening to them?<\/p>\n<p>Then get to work on to your friends, family, and colleagues.\u00a0 Encourage them to listen;
