{"id":606,"date":"2017-06-18T17:05:17","date_gmt":"2017-06-18T17:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/?p=606"},"modified":"2017-06-18T17:05:17","modified_gmt":"2017-06-18T17:05:17","slug":"intersectional-inclusion-perspectives-resistance-manual","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2017\/06\/18\/intersectional-inclusion-perspectives-resistance-manual\/","title":{"rendered":"Intersectional Inclusion: Perspectives from the Resistance Manual"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.resistancemanual.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-608\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/06\/resistance-manual-logo.png\" alt=\"Resistance Manual - A Project by Stay Woke\" width=\"817\" height=\"489\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the topics in my upcoming Open Source Bridge presentation <a href=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/2017\/04\/19\/grassroots-activism-open-source-coming-soon-open-source-bridge\/\">Grassroots Activism is Hard.\u00a0 Can Open Source Help?<\/a> is<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Highlight techniques from projects like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resistancemanual.org\/Resistance_Manual_Home\">Resistance Manual<\/a> that take an explicitly intersectional focus<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can see the work-in-progress list of techniques <a href=\"http:\/\/opensourcebridge.org\/wiki\/Intersectional_Techniques_for_Grassroots_Activism\">on the OSBridge wiki<\/a>.\u00a0 This post focuses specifically on the Resistance Manual.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I first ran into Resistance Manual co-founder Aditi Juneja on Twitter, in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AditiJuneja3\/status\/847266109313040384\">a thread started by Anil Dash<\/a>.\u00a0 At the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AditiJuneja3\/status\/852002523296800769\">the only people who had interviewed her about Resistance Manual were women.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 After I offered to break the pattern*, it turned into a three-part series on Civicist**:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/civichall.org\/civicist\/building-an-intersectional-movement-a-conversation-with-aditi-juneja\/\">Building an Intersectional Movement<\/a> introduces the Resistance Manual, describes its structure and how it fits into the movement ecosystem.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/civichall.org\/civicist\/how-to-make-inclusion-and-intersectionality-real\/\">How to Make Inclusion and Intersectionality Real<\/a> looks at techniques for operationalizing these principles<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/civichall.org\/civicist\/strategy-and-sustainability-in-uncertain-times\/\">Strategy and Sustainability in Uncertain Times<\/a> takes a step back and looks to the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the reasons I was so interested in talking to Aditi is that I&#8217;ve been <a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fascinated<\/a> by <a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=209\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wikis<\/a> for years.***\u00a0 Even more than that, though, I wanted to understand the perspectives of an grassroots organization co-founded by the Black Lives Matter activists of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staywoke.org\/\">Stay Woke<\/a> that explicitly took an intersectional view.<\/p>\n<p>Those perspectives start with the very good reasons they focus on intersectionality.\u00a0 First of all, they themselves lead intersectional lives &#8211; as Aditi said to me, she&#8217;s a woman of color with disabilities, so her identity is intersectional.\u00a0 And there&#8217;s also a key strategic reason.\u00a0 From the interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jon: Why is intersectionality a guiding principle for Resistance Manual?<\/p>\n<p>Aditi: In order to have a movement in this moment, we need to be very purposeful about coming out of issue-based silos, and seeing how the issues relate each other. Drawing these connections makes the movement stronger and more sustainable. It helps people form coalitions, and reach out to people they may not have thought of before.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just as important as the commitment to intersectionality, though, is the intentional approach to ensuring the principle is institutionalized in the organization&#8217;s structure and processes.\u00a0 There are several good examples in the interview, for example<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>actively looking for multiple intersectional perspectives on issues<\/li>\n<li>routing information to multiple teams to ensure it\u2019s in the right place as well as being cross referenced appropriately.<\/li>\n<li>highlighting disparities in impact from policies<\/li>\n<li>making intersectionality and inclusion everybody&#8217;s responsibility, not just assigning it to a specific team****<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Manual is crowdsourced, so we&#39;re sharing our internal principles &amp; guidelines with you, too!
