{"id":514,"date":"2017-05-07T17:21:47","date_gmt":"2017-05-07T17:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/?p=514"},"modified":"2024-01-20T05:14:07","modified_gmt":"2024-01-20T05:14:07","slug":"mastodon-perspectives-on-a-breakthrough-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2017\/05\/07\/mastodon-perspectives-on-a-breakthrough-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Mastodon: 14 perspectives on a breakthrough month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"graf graf--p\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-520\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/05\/mastodon_smaller.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"222\" \/>April was a big month for Mastodon, the open-source, decentralized, ad-free Twitter alternative.\u00a0\u00a0 As lead developer Eugen Rochko says<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Twitter changed the reply system, which everybody told them they shouldn\u2019t do, and then removed the iconic egg avatar for new users, and suddenly all of my work of telling people that one day Twitter would do something they didn\u2019t like and they\u2019d need a viable alternative paid off.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Yeah really!\u00a0 By the end of the month, Mastodon had grown to over\u00a0 500,000 users, over 1,000 instances, hundreds of contributors to the code base, and funding for a developer and project manager.\u00a0 Exciting times!<\/p>\n<p>Of course, rapid growth can cause challenges as well. \u00a0 Can Mastodon keep its anti-harassment, pro-furry, pro-LGBTQ+, anti-Nazi focus as it grows?\u00a0 What to do about content that&#8217;s acceptable by some instances but illegal elsewhere?\u00a0 Is the influx of new people who don&#8217;t understand the network&#8217;s culture the start of an &#8220;Eternal April&#8221;, like Usenet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eternal_September\">Eternal September<\/a>?*<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s certainly a lot to learn from this last month.\u00a0 Before sharing my own thoughts, I wanted to start with a bunch of other perspectives I found very useful.\u00a0 These are organized mostly-chronologically, so you can get a sense of how the month played out &#8211; although I put Eugen&#8217;s <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@Gargron\/april-post-mortem-12e3d141878c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@Gargron\/april-post-mortem-12e3d141878c\">April Post-Mortem<\/a> at the end, to give him the last word.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@sarahjeong\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"quote-image alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/05\/sarah-jeong.png\" alt=\"@sarahjeong@mastodon.social\" \/><\/a><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/mastodon-is-like-twitter-without-nazis-so-why-are-we-not-using-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/mastodon-is-like-twitter-without-nazis-so-why-are-we-not-using-it\">Mastodon Is Like Twitter Without Nazis, So Why Are We Not Using It?<\/a> by Sarah Jeong in <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Motherboard <\/em>(April 4), describes her experiences in late March and early April just as things started to heat up. Her summary of the culture: \u201cit\u2019s really more of an LGBTQ-oriented space, one with a lot of anime avatars and a lot of furries.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Her conclusion: \u201cAnd judging by the chatter on the federated timeline, a lot of people have found a home here. Mastodon, I think, is here to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\" style=\"clear: both;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@qinaliu\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"quote-image alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/05\/qina-liu.png\" alt=\"@qinaliu@mastodon.social\" \/><\/a><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" title=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@qinaliu\/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-joining-mastodon-7a17e7f12a2b\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@qinaliu\/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-joining-mastodon-7a17e7f12a2b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@qinaliu\/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-joining-mastodon-7a17e7f12a2b\">What I wish I knew before joining Mastodon,<\/a> by Qina Liu on <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">HackerNoon <\/em>(April 9), uses Harry Potter gifs as part of an excellent getting-started guide. Will gay-friendly Mastodon survive?
