{"id":422,"date":"2016-12-28T21:27:25","date_gmt":"2016-12-28T21:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/?p=422"},"modified":"2016-12-28T21:27:25","modified_gmt":"2016-12-28T21:27:25","slug":"five-software-projects-worth-supporting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2016\/12\/28\/five-software-projects-worth-supporting\/","title":{"rendered":"Five software projects worth supporting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tAs the year wraps up, it&#8217;s a natural time to think about supporting worthwhile projects and organizations.\u00a0 There are a lot of great non-profits working to make a difference in society, and in these challenging times it&#8217;s vital to support national groups like the <a href=\"http:\/\/centerformediajustice.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/centerformediajustice.org\/\">Center for Media Justice,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/unitedwedream.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/unitedwedream.org\/\">United We Dream<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bordc.org\/\">Bill of Rights Defense Committee \/ Defending Dissent<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/\">ACLU<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/\">EFF<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s also important to support local organizations and small businesses; ask around to see who&#8217;s making an impact on the causes you care about.*<\/p>\n<p>This list, though, has a somewhat different focus: software projects that I support &#8212; and hope you will too!\u00a0 Some of these are non-profits, others are businesses (where the best way to support them is to pay for their products).\u00a0 And keeping with the theme of this blog, all of them are very aware of diversity, whether or not it&#8217;s their primary focus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamwidth.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dreamwidth.org\/img\/tropo-red\/dw_logo.png\" alt=\"Dreamwidth logo\" width=\"240\" height=\"50\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamwidth.org\/\">Dreamwidth Studios<\/a> is a community for all kinds of creative folk.\u00a0 Yes, they have free accounts; but in a year where we&#8217;ve all seen first-hand the destructive effects of exploitative social networks we&#8217;re the users are the product, it&#8217;s worth putting down some money to support independent alternatives.\u00a0\u00a0 I talk a lot about Dreamwidth as a great example of a social network that really values diversity; it&#8217;s also a cool place to hang out!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.transhack.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-423 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/12\/transh4ck.png\" alt=\"Trans*H4CK logo\" width=\"240\" height=\"70\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.transhack.org\/\">Trans*H4ck<\/a> creates technology for the trans and gender non conforming community by incubating projects, running hackathons, hosting online and in-person events, and being a hub for trans visibility in tech.\u00a0 In 2017, Dr. Kortney Ziegler and the team are looking to launch local trans-focused spaces with their new Community H4CKters program.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihollaback.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ihollaback.org\/app\/themes\/hollaback-theme\/dist\/images\/hollaback-logo.png\" alt=\"hollaback! logo\" width=\"240\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Hollaback is a global movement to end harassment, and builds safe, inclusive public spaces by transforming the culture that perpetuates discrimination and violence.\u00a0 Executive Director Projects include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihollaback.org\/get-app\/\">Hollaback app<\/a> for responding to street harassment, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/iheartmob.org\/pages\/about\">Heartmob<\/a> platform for dealing with online harassment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thurst.in\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/thurst.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/thurst-tiny-wordless-logo-250px.png\" alt=\"Thurst logo\" width=\"240\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/thurst.in\/\">Thurst<\/a> is &#8220;the first dating app for queer people of all genders&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 Morgen Brommell&#8217;s outstanding AlterConf talk on <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MHEZ_N9pvmk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MHEZ_N9pvmk\">Imagining Radical Queer Futures Through Tech<\/a> is a great look at the possibilities of online spaces created by queer and trans people of color.After a promising beta test, Morgen&#8217;s currently working on security for a release in January 2017.\u00a0 As well as donating, you can support the project by getting <a href=\"https:\/\/thurst.myshopify.com\/\">a cool t-shirt or tote bag<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torproject.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-424\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/12\/tor-logo.png\" alt=\"Tor logo\" width=\"240\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torproject.org\/index.html.en\">Tor<\/a> is free anonymity software, helping defend against traffic analysis and other kinds of online tracking as well as\u00a0 circumventing censorship.\u00a0 Tor&#8217;s vital for activists, whistleblowers, and journalists across the world.
