CBP officials told congressional staff the data is maintained for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>Details of the database were revealed Thursday in a letter to CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus from Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), who criticized the agency for \u201callowing indiscriminate rifling through Americans\u2019 private records\u201d and called for stronger privacy protections.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"student-and-youth-privacy\">Student and youth privacy<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"with-%E2%80%98don%E2%80%99t-say-gay%E2%80%99-laws-abortion-bans-student-surveillance-raises-new-risks\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the74million.org\/article\/with-dont-say-gay-laws-abortion-bans-student-surveillance-raises-new-risks\/\">With \u2018Don\u2019t Say Gay\u2019 Laws &amp; Abortion Bans, Student Surveillance Raises New Risks<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Mark Keierleber, The 74 (the74million.org)<\/p>\n<p>With states adopting anti-LGBTQ laws and criminalizing abortion, privacy and civil rights advocates warn that school-issued devices could end up exposing students to legal peril.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For years, schools across the U.S. have used digital surveillance tools that collect a trove of information about youth sexuality \u2014 intimate details that are gleaned from students\u2019 conversations with friends, diary entries and search histories. Meanwhile, student information collected by student surveillance companies are regularly shared with police, according to a recent survey conducted by the nonprofit Center for Democracy and Technology. These two realities are concerning to Elizabeth Laird, the center\u2019s director of equity in civic technology. Following the Supreme Court\u2019s repeal of Roe v.
