{"id":3766,"date":"2021-04-02T06:29:28","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T06:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2021\/04\/02\/more-testimony-0401\/"},"modified":"2021-04-02T06:29:28","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T06:29:28","slug":"more-testimony-0401","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2021\/04\/02\/more-testimony-0401\/","title":{"rendered":"House Appropriations Testimony on SB 5062 &#8211; the snarky version"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This is the testimony I actually wound up giving at the hearing. \u00a0It was better live because I made air quotes around the spin that lobbyists were saying \ud83d\ude42 \u00a0 <a href=\"__GHOST_URL__\/testimony-0401\/\">You can see my longer written testimony here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Madame Chair, Mr. Ranking Member, and members of the committee,<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m Jon Pincus from Bellevue, a technologist and entrepreneur. \u00a0I OPPOSE the Bad Washington Privacy Act in its current form. \u00a0Others have already discussed the issues I covered in my <a href=\"__GHOST_URL__\/testimony-0401\/\">written testimony<\/a>. \u00a0So instead &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Lobbyists testifying CON tell you that even the very limited private right of action in the current version of the bill \u201cwith no chance for public input\u201d will cause them a \u201cburden\u201d. \u00a0Anything stronger will surely cause the sky to fall! \u00a0Remember last year, when they talked about the \u201crobust enforcement\u201d of the Senate bill &#8212; which lacked a <em>per se<\/em> clause, so even the AG couldn\u2019t enforce it?<\/p>\n<p>Of course industry prefers no liability when they break the law, and \u201crobust enforcement\u201d by 3.6 FTEs this year\u2019s bill budgets. \u00a0 \u00a0 So take what they say with a grain of salt.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, strengthen the private right of action and remove the right to cure. \u00a0Or go further, and adopt the People\u2019s Privacy Act as a striker. \u00a0It has bipartisan sponsorship and broad support from dozens of civil rights, immigrant rights, and grassroots organizations &#8212; input that the Senate has ignored over the last three years.<\/p>\n<p>A privacy bill without enforcement or deterrence will not protect Washingtonians. \u00a0So if you don\u2019t strengthen it, please vote no, and don\u2019t give the legislature\u2019s endorsement \u00a0to allowing predatory and exploitative behavior with no real consequences.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the testimony I actually wound up giving at the hearing. \u00a0It was better live because I made air quotes around the spin that lobbyists were saying \ud83d\ude42 \u00a0 You can see my longer written testimony here.
