If the TSA doesn&#8217;t get a lot of comments, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll say it shows that most people don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have any problem with the body scanners or TSA\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s other security procedures. But if there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a much more vocal response, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s much harder for the TSA to ignore them \u00e2\u20ac\u201c they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re required by law to reply to all the issues that are brought up in the commenting period.<\/p>\n<p>So please, send in your comments!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>My comments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The proposed rule is vaguely written and should be withdrawn, and the practices it would authorizes should be suspended.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 TSA should conduct a new cost-benefit analysis that fully considers the impact of body scanners and pat-downs on traveler privacy.<\/p>\n<p>If the rule is not withdrawn, it should be modified to adopt Regulatory Alternative #3 (walk-through metal detectors as primary screening and explosives trace detection on a random set of passengers) instead of AIT and pat-downs.<\/p>\n<p>AIT, as compared to WTMD and ETD, is extremely costly: the machines, training for the personnel to operate them, and the wasted time waiting in security lines are all hugely expensive, without providing additional value &#8212; tests at multiple European airports all led to dropping the AIT machines.\u00c2\u00a0 As a business traveler, the extra time spent in line and the unpleasantness of the putdown process creates a significant impact on my travel.\u00c2\u00a0 The docket claims that the machines do not introduce additional delays, but this is clearly not the case in practice: when lines get long, metal detector lanes are opened to speed people through the gates.\u00c2\u00a0 In addition, the use of AIT as a primary screening technology fails the test laid out in US v.
