{"id":340,"date":"2009-02-04T11:07:34","date_gmt":"2009-02-04T18:07:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=340"},"modified":"2009-02-04T11:07:34","modified_gmt":"2009-02-04T18:07:34","slug":"scenarios-for-topprog-your-thoughts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2009\/02\/04\/scenarios-for-topprog-your-thoughts\/","title":{"rendered":"Scenarios for #topprog: your thoughts?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/static.twitter.com\/images\/search\/twitter-logo-small.png\" alt=\"twitter logo\" width=\"175\" height=\"41\" \/>Last night&#8217;s <strong>#topprog<\/strong> Tweetup, discussing the next steps for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=334\">new progressive Twitter hashtag<\/a>, had some excellent discussions. \u00c2\u00a0 Chris Cardinal (aka @cacardinal) has set up a skeleton web page on <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/bbmu3n\">topprog.org<\/a> and did a great job facilitating the tweetup; he&#8217;ll be writing up a summary later today.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Somehow, though, I wound up with an action item &#8212; writing up a couple of quick scenarios for ways to use #topprog.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 How&#8217;d that happen?!?!?\u00c2\u00a0 Looks like my meeting skills are rusty!<\/p>\n<p>Still it&#8217;s a good thing to focus on.\u00c2\u00a0 Twitter hashtags are extremely flexible, and there are zillions of things we could do with them.\u00c2\u00a0 What are some of the sweet spots?\u00c2\u00a0 And how do we use #topprog to accomplish them?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll kick things off with a couple that seem important: action alerts and events.\u00c2\u00a0 Suggestions and feedback\u00c2\u00a0 are very welcome: in the comments here, or tweeted to #topprog if it&#8217;s 140 characters or less \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Action alerts<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/jdp23\/status\/1176703258\">For example<\/a>,*<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>call your Senators about the stimulus! @ 1-866-544-7573 <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/jdp23\/status\/1176703258\">http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/cd582s<\/a> #action #topprog<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is something we discussed during the tweetup: include the <strong>#action<\/strong> tag to highlight that it&#8217;s an action alert.<\/p>\n<p>Doing <a href=\"http:\/\/search.twitter.com\/search?q=%23topprog+%23action\">a Twitter search for &#8220;#topprog #action&#8221;<\/a> gives all the action alerts.\u00c2\u00a0 With a little programming, we can probably set up a widget for topprog.org (and anybody else who wants it) that sorts action alerts by how many times they&#8217;re Tweeted.<\/p>\n<h3>Events<\/h3>\n<p>Twitter&#8217;s a good broadcast mechanism for in-person as well as virtual events.\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a couple of examples from this morning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">RT @<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/jwjnational\">jwjnational<\/a>: in DC workers &amp; electeds talk about #employeefreechoice. 12:30pm at Upper Senate Park #event #topprog<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>GetFISARight conference call Saturday 2\/7 2 pm Pacific\/5 p.m Eastern, agenda and dialin info at <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/ccxedh\">http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/ccxedh<\/a> #topprog #tcot #event<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If we can come up with conventions on how to specify date and time, it should be easy to display <a href=\"http:\/\/search.twitter.com\/search?q=%23topprog+%23event\">the #topprog #event feed<\/a> in a calendar form &#8212; which&#8217;d be kinda cool.<\/p>\n<p>Note that I&#8217;m not suggesting that we build a separate event mechanism for RSVPs etc.\u00c2\u00a0 Between Facebook, evite, MySpace, MyBO, and so on, there are already more than enough of those!
