{"id":319,"date":"2009-01-10T14:20:51","date_gmt":"2009-01-10T21:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=319"},"modified":"2009-01-10T14:20:51","modified_gmt":"2009-01-10T21:20:51","slug":"push-to-repeal-doma-ways-to-take-action-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2009\/01\/10\/push-to-repeal-doma-ways-to-take-action-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Stonewall 2.0: Repeal DOMA!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3481\/3185860556_6f02184330.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"civil equality now\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>The vibe under the sunshine at the corner of Castro and Market was positive and determined &#8212; a few hundred people maybe (I&#8217;m horrible at estimating), just the right size for the location.\u00c2\u00a0 The immediate purpose was to organize for signature-gathering for <a href=\"http:\/\/jointheimpact.com\/2009\/01\/doma-protest-signature-drive-411\/\">the Open Letter to President Obama<\/a>, with people fanning out afterwards to BART stops, busy street-corners, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indybay.org\/newsitems\/2009\/01\/07\/18559340.php\">the Gaza protest<\/a> &#8230; in the broader context, it&#8217;s another building block in the &#8220;Stonewall 2.0&#8221; wave of activism catalyzed by groups like<strong> Join the Impact<\/strong> and <strong>Courage Campaign<\/strong> that I&#8217;ve blogged about in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=268\">Petitions are soooooo 20th century<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=275\">Taking social network activism (and LGBTQ rights) to the next level<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One way to take action now: <a href=\"http:\/\/jointheimpact.com\/2009\/01\/doma-protest-signature-drive-411\/\">gather signatures for the open letter<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s a very short deadline of Monday but that&#8217;s still plenty of time to help &#8212; even &#8220;just&#8221; hitting the friends-and-family circuit the way we are can make a big difference.\u00c2\u00a0 And of course help get the word out about the effort.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Another way you can help: vote in change.org&#8217;s Idea for Change in America competition. Jen Nedeau&#8217;s idea <a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/ideas\/view\/pass_marriage_equality_rights_for_lgbt_couples_nationwide\">Pass Marriage Equality Rights for LGBT Couples Nationwide<\/a> is in fifth place so far.\u00c2\u00a0 The top 10 ideas when voting ends on January 15 will be presented to the Obama Administration on Inauguration Day and will be supported by a national lobbying campaign run by Change.org, MySpace, and some great non-profit partners.\u00c2\u00a0 There are a lot of other great ideas there being promoted very effectively* so any assistance here would be greatly appreciated.<\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--more-->At the rally, Stuart Gaffney of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marriageequality.org\/\">Marriage Equality<\/a> laid out the political landscape: the steadily-increasing strength of support for repealing DOMA (Bob Barr!) and the need to keep it a priority for President-elect Obama, Speaker Pelosi (who&#8217;s also the Castro&#8217;s representative) and the new Congress.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/heathergold.com\/show\/conversation\/prop8redux\/\">Heather Gold<\/a> talked about &#8220;we have the internet now &#8212; we don&#8217;t need to wait for big slow organizations with letters in their name decide to act&#8221;, and also the importance of reaching out directly to other people face-to-face.\u00c2\u00a0 Caitlin of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.couragecampaign.org\/\">Courage Campaign<\/a> gave a quick &#8220;know your rights&#8221; tutorial for signature gatherers, and then folks got organized and fanned out.\u00c2\u00a0 Very impressive organizing.<\/p>\n<p>Especially with the optimistic and resulote mood at the historic corner, a few short weeks after seeing Milk at the Castro theater &#8230;
