{"id":315,"date":"2009-01-02T11:51:23","date_gmt":"2009-01-02T18:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=315"},"modified":"2009-01-02T11:51:23","modified_gmt":"2009-01-02T18:51:23","slug":"on-to-the-second-round-of-ideas-for-change-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2009\/01\/02\/on-to-the-second-round-of-ideas-for-change-in-america\/","title":{"rendered":"On to the second round of &#8220;Ideas for Change in America&#8221;!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/getfisaright.wordpress.com\/2009\/01\/02\/on-to-the-second-round-of-ideas-for-change-in-america\/\"><em>Also posted on the new Get FISA Right blog<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3198\/3046160741_a8dd6a3b40.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/>Happy new year!<\/p>\n<p>My idea <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/ideas\/view\/get_fisa_right_repeal_the_patriot_act_and_restore_our_civil_liberties\">Get FISA Right, repeal the PATRIOT Act, and restore our civil liberties<\/a> finished #2 in the Criminal Justice category of change.org\/MySpace&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/ideas\">Ideas for Change in America<\/a> competition, and so has advanced to the second round.<\/p>\n<p>We can revise the idea over the next couple of days (<a href=\"http:\/\/get-fisa-right.wetpaint.com\/page\/Change.org+idea+for+second+round\">suggestions please!<\/a>) and then second-round voting runs from January 5 to January 15.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/get-fisa-right.wetpaint.com\/page\/Ideas+for+Change+competition\">We&#8217;ll be promoting it actively, of course<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;ll be a press conference on January 16 to introduce the top 10, change.org will work with each of them to help build and promote national advocacy campaigns.\u00c2\u00a0 With change.org&#8217;s 200,000 members, proven ability to attack media attention, and a great list of partners for Ideas for Change in America, it&#8217;s a great opportunity &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And some really tough competition.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->We finished the first round in the #10 overall, with 2171 votes; Pierre Loiselle&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/ideas\/view\/repeal_the_patriot_act\">Repeal the Patriot Act<\/a> also made it into the second round at #2 in the &#8220;Other&#8221; category with 2068 votes, so there&#8217;s clearly a lot of support for civil liberties.\u00c2\u00a0 However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=309\">during the last week of the contest<\/a> it was clear that a lot of other ideas organized much more effectively than we were, sending mail out to existing networks and getting prominent blog posts.*\u00c2\u00a0 And as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=312\">Open for Questions on change.gov has clearly shown<\/a>, advocates for for drug reform and a special prosecutor are very well organized.<\/p>\n<p>So we&#8217;ll need to get creative &#8212; in terms of reaching out to our existing members (how many of our 23,000 can we get to vote?), forging new alliances, and getting the word out.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;re about to launch our TV ad <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n8c8KJVLsP4\">President Obama, please get FISA right<\/a>, and that should get some publicity.\u00c2\u00a0 Change.org CEO Ben Rattray&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/GetFISAright-Discussion\/browse_thread\/thread\/3a7d2581122a72c3?hl=en\">&#8220;congratulations!&#8221; mail<\/a> has some other good suggestions:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>4. You may edit the text of your idea anytime before the beginning of voting on Monday, January 5th.<br \/>\n5. We strongly encourage you to consider adding a short video (30\u00e2\u20ac\u201c 90 seconds) describing your idea and its potential impact.<br \/>\n6. We also encourage you to recruit bloggers and nonprofits to indicate their support for your idea.\u00c2\u00a0 These &#8220;sponsors&#8221; will be listed on the right column alongside your idea and can be used to help raise awareness about your idea and to provide additional credibility.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We already do have a video up, our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=x8KmBNufzmQ\">Don&#8217;t let our Constitution die<\/a> from last July which I think is the most succinct statement of what&#8217;s wrong with the FISA Amendments Act.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s certainly worth taking another look at our idea; <a href=\"http:\/\/get-fisa-right.wetpaint.com\/page\/Change.org+idea+for+second+round\">suggestions welcome on how to improve it<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 And other ideas for promoting are welcome as well.\u00c2\u00a0 Our work&#8217;s cut out for us &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So congratulations to all for getting us this far &#8230; now, let&#8217;s get to work!<\/p>\n<p>jon<\/p>\n<p>* a couple of examples: Jori Manske&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/ideas\/view\/bridging_the_empathy_gap_-_yes_we_can\">Bridging the Empathy Gap &#8211; Yes we can!<\/a> went from nowhere to the #1 spot in Government Reform with 2361 votes in the last week; Ed Ciaccio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/ideas\/view\/end_corporate_personhood\">END CORPORATE &#8220;PERSONHOOD&#8221;<\/a> (which had been submitted over a month ago but was languishing in #13 in Other) made it to the top 3 after a diary on <em>Daily Kos<\/em>; and DreamACTivist&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dreamactivist.org\/2008\/12\/30\/a-final-push-for-pro-migrant-ideas-at-changeorg\/\">Final push for pro-migrant ideas<\/a> led to a late surge in the Immigration category.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Also posted on the new Get FISA Right blog Happy new year!
