I think it&#8217;s on track to be a big success, so expect me to be talking about it a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, I&#8217;ll start with diversity.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Vic Gundotra*, Google\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s SVP of Social and the head guy in charge of Plus, said,\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u009dWe chose the initial seed very carefully. We wanted a lot of diversity, so we have people that represent over 42 of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s languages\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Jason Hiner, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/blog\/btl\/is-google-about-to-transform-the-web\/52004\">Is Google+ About to transform the web?<\/a>&#8220;, <em>Between the lines<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well done!\u00c2\u00a0 And multi-lingual support right out of the box is just one of the things that G+ is doing right on the diversity front. A few other examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A passionate <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/106717946845088683921\/posts\/TpZdvT1p69m\">post<\/a> by Google engineer Chee Chew reaching out to get more deaf people involved in giving feedback on video chat in Hangouts<\/li>\n<li>After heated discussions, spurred on in part by <a href=\"http:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=2741425\">an excellent post<\/a> from xkcd&#8217;s Randall Monroe, the gender field on the profile fields can now remain private**. <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/106792630639449031994\/posts\/5kt9TpEb77m\">Frances Haugen&#8217;s video<\/a> and Liz Fong&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/plus.google.com\/106912596786226524817\/posts\/KCUbRMKQ7VP\">transcript<\/a> have the details.<\/li>\n<li>As Pam Spaulding of Pam&#8217;s House Blend observes, LGBTQ bloggers have gotten on board quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kudos to Google on all of these fronts.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, not all the news is good:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When Vic and Brad and Larry and Sergey were carefully considering their initial seed users, they apparently didn&#8217;t think about gender.\u00c2\u00a0 Paul Allen&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/117388252776312694644\/posts\/PhNChsw1wQz\">analyses<\/a> suggest that about four days into the field test Google+ was over 75% male, and still remains 66% guys; and <a href=\"http:\/\/socialstatistics.com\/\">the most-followed users<\/a> are almost all white as well as almost all male.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike in Diaspora, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahdopp.com\/blog\/2010\/gender-is-a-text-field-diaspora-backstory-and-context\/\">gender is a text field,<\/a> Google+ gender identities are limited to &#8220;male&#8221;, &#8220;female&#8221;, and &#8220;other&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>While romack&#8217;s initial impressions from an accessibility perspective on <em>No Eyes Needed<\/em> are &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/noeyesneeded.com\/2011\/06\/accessibility-of-google-will-blind-users-be-1ing\/\">better than expected<\/a>&#8220;, there&#8217;s still tons of problems.<\/li>\n<li>The current policy about pseudonymous names has sparked charges of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.duh.org\/2011\/07\/googles-no-pseudonyms-policy-is.html\">homophobia<\/a> as well as disappointment from <a href=\"http:\/\/geekfeminism.org\/2011\/07\/10\/the-status-of-pseudonymity-and-privacy-on-google\/\">feminists<\/a>, Second Lifers (<a href=\"http:\/\/gwynethllewelyn.net\/2011\/07\/13\/open-letter-to-googles-larry-page\/\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/dwellonit.taterunino.net\/2011\/07\/13\/of-nyms-and-names\/\">2<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/cityofnidus.blogspot.com\/2011\/07\/google-and-future-of-avatar-identity.html\">3<\/a>), and <a href=\"http:\/\/jilliancyork.com\/2011\/07\/07\/google-and-real-names\/\">human rights advocates<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, Google+ still just at the &#8220;limited field trial&#8221; stage, and is very much a work in progress.\u00c2\u00a0 Since many of these things become steadily more difficult to change as you get more users and a bigger code base, now&#8217;s a crucial time for them to address diversity.\u00c2\u00a0 So over the next few weeks, I&#8217;ll look at the various issues and what Google is &#8212; and isn&#8217;t &#8212; doing.<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned for more!
