Furthermore, any group that fails to upgrade is &#8220;archived&#8221;, where it is  converted to the new format anyway, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/?faq=20336\">but we lose all of our members.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bummer.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Needless to say, it&#8217;s not just One Million Strong. IreGyre&#8217;s advocacy group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/comments\/976112\/41574663#c14\">is in the same boat<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>we have 6,800+ members and have not been given the upgrade option so we  are very likely going to be zeroed out when it is involuntarily archived  and converted. Zero members. I will have a doozy of a time trying to  get it built back up<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Alas, it comes with the territory.\u00c2\u00a0 Facebook&#8217;s a very challenging place to do political activism.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpj.org\/internet\/2011\/03\/michael-antis-exile-from-facebook-over-real-name-p.php\">Their recent deletion of Chinese blogger Michael Anti&#8217;s account<\/a> is just one <a href=\"http:\/\/rconversation.blogs.com\/rconversation\/2010\/05\/more-problems-in-facebookistan.html\">a long line<\/a> of unfriendly actions. Back in 2008, Facebook suspended the accounts of quite a few One Million Strong group members &#8212; <a href=\"..\/?p=82\">including me<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Since then they&#8217;ve been steadily taking away functionality from groups.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost like they don&#8217;t want us talking to each other.<\/p>\n<p>But the 2008 election was largely won on social networks, so Facebook&#8217;s too important to overlook.\u00c2\u00a0 The conservative For America page <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=2760\">appears to have taken the early organizing lead<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 One Million Strong for Barack&#8217;s just starting to crank up a new Facebook Page, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ItBeginsWithUs\">It Begins With Us<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 It only has about 1100 fans so far so it would be a big disappointment if all the group&#8217;s members disappear.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Barack Obama and Mike Zuckerberg by Kei!, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keinoguchi\/5638908432\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5181\/5638908432_a05d892054_z.jpg\" alt=\"Barack Obama and Mike Zuckerberg\" width=\"220\" height=\"137\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s kind of weird when you think about it.\u00c2\u00a0 Mark and Barack certainly seem to &#8220;like&#8221; each other.   Last month Mark even put on a tie and jacket when Barack dropped at the Facebook Town Hall.\u00c2\u00a0 Now his company&#8217;s on the verge of &#8220;archiving&#8221; the biggest grassroots group of Obama supporters.  What&#8217;s with that?<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully once things get escalated to the right level at Facebook, sanity will prevail and the group can move forward.
