Popkin&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/technolog.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2011\/03\/12\/6250690-sxsw-vote-on-your-social-network-users-bill-of-rights\">Vote on your &#8216;Social Network Users&#8217; Bill of Rights&#8217;<\/a> on MSNBC&#8217;s <em>Technolog<\/em>, Kim Cameron&#8217;s post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=1172\">on the <em>Identity Weblog<\/em><\/a>, and a brief link from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/222288\/web_companies_should_practice_data_stewardship.html\">Mark Sullivan of <em>PC World<\/em><\/a>.  Here&#8217;s the voting so far<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>41 yes 0 no<\/em> Honesty: Honor your privacy policy and terms of service<\/li>\n<li><em>41 yes 0 no<\/em> Clarity: Make sure that policies, terms of service, and settings are easy to find and understand<\/li>\n<li><em>41 yes 0 no<\/em> Freedom of speech: Do not delete or modify my data without a clear policy and justification<\/li>\n<li><em>33 yes 4 no<\/em> Empowerment : Support assistive technologies and universal accessibility<\/li>\n<li><em>35 yes 2 no<\/em> Self-protection: Support privacy-enhancing technologies<\/li>\n<li><em>37 yes 3 no<\/em> Data minimization: Minimize the information I am required to provide and share with others<\/li>\n<li><em>39 yes 1 no<\/em> Control: Let me control my data, and don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t facilitate sharing it unless I agree first<\/li>\n<li><em>39 yes 1 no<\/em> Predictability: Obtain my prior consent before significantly changing who can see my data.<\/li>\n<li><em>38 yes 0 no<\/em> Data portability: Make it easy for me to obtain a copy of my data<\/li>\n<li><em>39 yes 0 no<\/em> Protection: Treat my data as securely as your own confidential data unless I choose to share it, and notify me if it is compromised<\/li>\n<li><em>36 yes 2 no<\/em> Right to know: Show me how you are using my data and allow me to see who and what has access to it.<\/li>\n<li><em>24 yes 13 no<\/em> Right to self-define: Let me create more than one identity and use pseudonyms. Do not link them without my permission.<\/li>\n<li><em>35 yes 1 no<\/em> Right to appeal: Allow me to appeal punitive actions<\/li>\n<li><em>37 yes 1 no<\/em> Right to withdraw: Allow me to delete my account, and remove my data<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So it&#8217;s in general overwhelmingly positive: five rights are unanimous, and another eight at 89% or higher.\u00c2\u00a0 The one exception: the right to self-define, currently at about 65%.\u00c2\u00a0 As I said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=2596#comment-135798\">in a comment<\/a> on the earlier thread, this right is vital for people like whistleblowers, domestic violence victims, political  dissidents, closeted LGBTQs.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I wonder whether the large minority of people who don&#8217;t think it matters are thinking about it from those perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>The voting continues at <a href=\"http:\/\/SNUBillOfRights.com\">http:\/\/SNUBillOfRights.com<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Please voice your opinion!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The SXSW panel got a decent amount of attention, including article by Helen A.
