Feedback welcome!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Stop Spying on Americans\" src=\"http:\/\/act.credoaction.com\/images\/campaigns\/doj_stop_spying.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"157\" \/>Talk about a shocker!\u00c2\u00a0 24 Republicans (including 8 new members) joined with 124 Democrats to stand up for civil liberties and defeat an attempt to sneak Patriot Act Reauthorization through the House.\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what <a href=\"https:\/\/eff.org\/r.5xT\">EFF<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/gNq1oP\">Wired<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/is.gd\/BgktVa\">Washington Post<\/a> have to say about this unexpected victory.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to everybody who joined in the flash activism campaign and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=2439\">made some noise<\/a>!\u00c2\u00a0 It was a great multi-partisan campaign that broke through the media blackout and got some attention.\u00c2\u00a0 So let&#8217;s take a moment to celebrate!<\/p>\n<p>Okay, now back to work.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h1>The legislative landscape<\/h1>\n<blockquote><p>In the coming days, BORDC will launch a coalition effort calling for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraryjournal.com\/article\/CA6697617.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transformative changes to the PATRIOT Act<\/a>,  as well as intelligence authorities embedded in the FISA Amendments of  2008. \u00c2\u00a0The JUSTICE Act, which gained the support of seven Senators last  year, would restore <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/national-security\/breakdown-justice-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">various protections for privacy<\/a> across a range of government programs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Shahid Buttar of BORDC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.constitutioncampaign.org\/blog\/?p=1424\">on <em>The People&#8217;s Blog for the Constitution<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The next battle is in the Senate.\u00c2\u00a0 With <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/floor-action\/senate\/142143-senate-split-over-how-to-extend-patriot-act-surveillance-authorities\">three bills in play<\/a>, a deadline of February 28, and Congress on recess the last week of the month, it&#8217;ll be an intense time.\u00c2\u00a0 The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to mark up Leahy&#8217;s bill S.193 on Thursday, although I&#8217;ve also heard that Feinstein&#8217;s S.? is more likely to come to the floor.\u00c2\u00a0 And while Leahy&#8217;s bill is better than the other options in play (see the EFF and ALA had to say), it&#8217;s still a lot weaker than the last year&#8217;s JUSTICE Act.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Need to be specific about what we&#8217;re doing. <\/span> If I understand correctly, it&#8217;s weighing in against Feinstean and Grassley, building support for reintroduction of the Justice Act, and pressing for amendments to Leahy.\u00c2\u00a0 We can set up &#8220;legislative agendas&#8221; in POPVOX to make this easier; I&#8217;ll prototype something tomorrow. <\/em><\/p>\n<h1>Firing on all channels<\/h1>\n<figure style=\"width: 279px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wthashtag.com\/Patriotact\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5298\/5430397576_852b238ddd.jpg\" alt=\"increasing from almost nothing on February 4 to a lot on February 9\" width=\"279\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mentions of #patriotact on Twitter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the things that&#8217;s working extremely well on the activism front is that there are a lot of different ways for people to engage. \u00c2\u00a0  <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.aclu.org\/site\/Advocacy?cmd=display&amp;page=UserAction&amp;id=1599\">ACLU<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.eff.org\/site\/Advocacy?cmd=display&amp;page=UserAction&amp;id=459\">EFF<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.downsizedc.org\/blog\/urgent-patriot-act-vote-on-tuesday\">Downsize DC<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/act.demandprogress.org\/sign\/patriotact\/?source=fdl\">Demand Progress<\/a>, the ALA, and lots of other groups have action alerts out.\u00c2\u00a0 And there&#8217;s plenty of discussion too, on blogs and message boards and mailing lists &#8212; and Twitter, of course.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Key points, still a sketch<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; focus energy on POPVOX &#8212; <em>complementary <\/em>to the others.\u00c2\u00a0 reach out to other organizations<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; continue to use #patriotact hashtag.\u00c2\u00a0 link to info about how to use it well<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; what about Facebook?\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 if we get simple processes in place that make it easy to find out about and &#8216;like&#8217; posts as they go up, we can start to reach new people virally &#8212; while helping each org&#8217;s page get visibility.<\/p>\n<h1>Next steps<\/h1>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got an organizing call schedule for <strong>Wednesday at 4 p.m. Eastern\/1 p.m. Pacific<\/strong> to discuss more.\u00c2\u00a0 Agenda and dialin information coming soon; check the <a href=\"http:\/\/getfisaright.wordpress.com\/\">Get FISA Right blog<\/a> for the details.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; need a media outreach plan and volunteers<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; what video assets do we have (or can we quickly generate)?<\/p>\n<h1>The opportunity<\/h1>\n<p>The Patriot Act is only one of the major civil liberties battles we&#8217;ll be fighting in 2011.\u00c2\u00a0 COICA, expansion of internet surveillance (&#8220;CALEA 2.0&#8221;), the\u00c2\u00a0 internet &#8220;kill switch&#8221;, the TSA&#8217;s scanning and groping approach to security &#8230; it&#8217;ll be a busy year.\u00c2\u00a0 So the skills and connections we build in this battle will be useful time and again.\u00c2\u00a0 And wouldn&#8217;t it be great to start\u00c2\u00a0 2012 with savvy acivil liberty supporters from across the political spectrum? \u00c2\u00a0 Progressives, libertarians, Tea Partiers, and centrists who despite their disagreements on other issues share a commitment to civil liberties and are used to working together could be a potent force in a lot of primaries and general elections.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Dynamite ending here!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Draft!
