{"id":2009,"date":"2010-10-17T10:09:23","date_gmt":"2010-10-17T17:09:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=2009"},"modified":"2010-10-17T10:09:23","modified_gmt":"2010-10-17T17:09:23","slug":"starting-the-day-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2010\/10\/17\/starting-the-day-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting the day out &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Morning Mist by DaveKav, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/d-kav\/2928884917\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3040\/2928884917_e8dc11da38_t.jpg\" alt=\"Morning Mist\" width=\"171\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a>Am I the only person out there who takes a step back every few months to observe how I&#8217;m starting my online and day decide what kind of changes I want to make?<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t ever done this, it can be very illuminating.\u00c2\u00a0 Back in 2008, for example, when I was doing a lot of political activism, I looked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=147\">where I was getting my news<\/a>, and quickly discovered substantially more interesting and diverse perspectives.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 More recently I&#8217;ve been focusing on writing <em>Tales from the Net<\/em>, and also laying the groundwork for a new startup and\/or consulting gigs, so have been thinking a lot about how to adapt.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s how I&#8217;m currently starting my online days.  The order varies, and sometimes I leave some of these out, but it gives the basic idea.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d love to hear what others think about this &#8212; or what you do.<!--more--><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>checking Facebook and Twitter to see if there&#8217;s anything I need to respond to &#8212; and what&#8217;s new with my friends.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve told people that&#8217;s the best way to contact me (my business card doesn&#8217;t even have an email address on it) so I want to be responsive<\/li>\n<li>looking at my <a href=\"http:\/\/kallistixf.dreamwidth.org\/read\">Dreamwidth reading page<\/a>, which follows a couple dozen people, blogs, and comics (including <em>Liminal States <\/em>and <em>Tales from the Net<\/em> as well as <em>PrivacyActivism, GeekFeminism, Restructure, Zephoria, xkcd, Dilbert<\/em>, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>checking Twitter for news, and retweeting interesting links.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/paper.li\/jdp23\">paper.li<\/a> gives a nice summary of what the people I&#8217;m following are tweeting.\u00c2\u00a0 I also have columns in Tweetdeck for the hashtags I&#8217;m interested in (#fem2, #woc, #diversitywin\/#diversityfail, #privacy, etc.) and am just starting to use lists.<\/li>\n<li>checking my newest email account, where I&#8217;ve been pretty successful at keeping the inbox to near zero and get only a few messages a day.<\/li>\n<li>visiting HackerNews, which now fills the role for me Slashdot used to: seeing what&#8217;s interesting to techie guys.\u00c2\u00a0 I check the front page and new stories, follow a couple of links, vote a few things up, and try to find a couple of things to comment &#8212; I&#8217;m trying to build a presence there, so am consciously working on my reputation.<\/li>\n<li>visiting BlackWeb 2.0, Pam&#8217;s House Blend, Racialicious, and\/or Reappropriate (as well as the various sites in my reading list to check out comments).\u00c2\u00a0 HN is overwhelmingly white male, so these are good antidotes \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>at this point my brain&#8217;s pretty engaged, so I spend a little time writing a blog post or (more recently) a journal entry.\u00c2\u00a0 In November, I&#8217;ll use this time to work on some fiction instead as part of NaNoWriMo.<\/li>\n<li>if I&#8217;m in the mood to procrastinate, I&#8217;ll check a few political sites (Marc Ambinder, <em>Democratic Strategist, 538 <\/em>(although it&#8217;s gotten a lot less interesting now that it&#8217;s at the NY Times)), <em>Slashdot<\/em>, Wired&#8217;s <em>Threat Level <\/em>and <em>Epicenter<\/em>, <em>VentureBeat, <\/em><\/li>\n<li>and now I finally check my other email accounts to see if there&#8217;s stuff I have to deal with.\u00c2\u00a0 which, alas, there usually is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your mileage presumably varies.\u00c2\u00a0 Do tell!<\/p>\n<p>jon<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/d-kav\/2928884917\/\">Morning Mist<\/a> by DaveKav via Flickr&#8217;s Creative Commons Search <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Am I the only person out there who takes a step back every few months to observe how I&#8217;m starting my online and day decide what kind of changes I want to make?
