{"id":1699,"date":"2010-09-11T09:01:05","date_gmt":"2010-09-11T16:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=1699"},"modified":"2024-01-20T04:59:04","modified_gmt":"2024-01-20T04:59:04","slug":"what-does-emotional-software-look-like","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/2010\/09\/11\/what-does-emotional-software-look-like\/","title":{"rendered":"Emoware: What does &#8220;emotional software&#8221; feel like?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #e41ad8;\"><em>Originally titled What does &#8220;emotional software&#8221; look like?<br \/>\nSee the first comment for more<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/blog\/?p=104\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1700\" style=\"border: 0pt none;\" title=\"28 percent remaining\" src=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/28-percent-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"28 percent\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Those of you who know me as a software engineer have no doubt heard me talk repeatedly about how if you look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=236\">computer science as a social science<\/a>, it&#8217;s clear that there are a lot of consequences to the lack of diversity in the discipline.\u00c2\u00a0 One of them is that a lot of the design space just isn&#8217;t getting explored.<\/p>\n<p>Most software today is designed and developed by teams and companies (or open-source projects) where the power is with white guys whose cognitive style is analytical and reductionist.\u00c2\u00a0 A lot of developers would agree with the Microsoft Technical Fellow my former Ad Astra colleagues once worked with trying to design an asset-based thinking workshop: &#8220;I&#8217;d much rather not talk about emotion&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Functional, sparse, flat designs with limited configurability in the style of 37 Signals are great for people who like that kind of interaction.\u00c2\u00a0 A lot of us don&#8217;t, and our needs are badly underserved.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->So when Cindy Gallop left <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=905&amp;cpage=1#comment-87410\">a comment<\/a> in my thread <em>Guys talking to guys who talk about guys<\/em> &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>My startup <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifwerantheworld.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/www.ifwerantheworld.com<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a simple web-meets-world platform designed to turn good intentions into action, one microaction at a time \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is what I describe as \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcemotional software\u00e2\u20ac\u2122: the synthesis of technology and psychology.<\/p>\n<p>My startup team is 4 women, 3 men.
