Pause, and look at things differently.\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/471961897?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Shireen Mitchell&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/471961897\"><em>Everybody&#8217;s been targeted by disinformation and other propaganda<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Shireen says, if you have an immediate reaction to share a link without verifying or fact-checking, you need to pause and take some time to think about it.\u00a0 One of the goals of disinformation is to get you to react emotionally.\u00a0 Even if it&#8217;s something you agree with, it&#8217;s important to pause and think for a bit.<\/p>\n<p>To start with, is the information you&#8217;re about to share accurate and from a reliable source?\u00a0\u00a0 If not, be very careful not to give it more visibility by trying to debunk it.\u00a0\u00a0 Even if the information you&#8217;re about to share is accurate, look at the headline and any images that you&#8217;re sharing to make sure they&#8217;ve got the right framing.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid headlines that include disinfo.\u00a0 Instead, look for headlines and articles that focus on the accurate information, or report that there\u2019s disinfo but don\u2019t repeat it.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t find a headline and article that work well, consider just quoting a few lines from an article (or taking a screenshot) rather than linking.\u00a0 Shireen&#8217;s <a class=\"bo hv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@IndiPlusWA\/deep-dive-responding-to-disinfo-and-digital-voter-suppression-with-shireen-mitchell-b2109173866f\" rel=\"noopener\">Deep dive<\/a>\u00a0goes into a lot more detail on this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1426\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/10\/reframe-how-not-to.png\" alt=\"Image: somebody typing the words &quot;OMG DID YOU SEE THIS&quot;. DO take a screenshot if you must share, and share only through email, messenger, etc. 5. DO educate your community to exercise the same discipline. and emphasizing the importance of counting every vote.<\/p>\n<p>The last few days of voting are always somewhat chaotic, with ballot box and polling place closures, long lines and broken machines, and reports of voter intimidation.\u00a0 Take the time to verify that the information you&#8217;re sharing is accurate before you share updates! \u00a0 Voting rights organizations, official state and county election sites, and reputable local media are usually the most reliable sources.\u00a0 Personal experiences on people are sharing on social media may or may not be accurate &#8212; or may not be the whole story &#8212; so\u00a0 investigate before amplifying.<\/p>\n<p>One very good thing to share is information about how to contact the non-partisan <a href=\"https:\/\/866ourvote.org\/\"><strong>Election Protection hotlines<\/strong><\/a> is useful for anybody having challenges voting &#8212; or concerned that their vote might not get counted.\u00a0\u00a0 Trained volunteers are available in multiple languages:\u00a0 866-OUR-VOTE (866 687 8683) for English; 888-Ve-Y-Vota (888 839 8682) for Spanish and English; If you see false or misleading voting information submit it to ReportDisinfo.org. Have questions? Call Election Protection at 866-OUR-VOTE. \" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest challenges about disinformation is that it often flies below the radar &#8212; making it hard to respond.\u00a0\u00a0 So when you see disinformation, report it!\u00a0\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a few ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"graf graf--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/reportdisinfo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/reportdisinfo.org\/\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">ReportDisinfo.org<\/strong><\/a> is an easy-to-use site to report disinformation, run by Common Cause Election Fund. You can include a link to the web page, or upload an image.<\/li>\n<li class=\"graf graf--p\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/stoponlinevaw.com\/stop-digital-voter-suppression-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/stoponlinevaw.com\/stop-digital-voter-suppression-project\/\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Stop Digital Voter Suppression<\/strong><\/a> is the place to report digital voter suppression. Also consider reporting voting-related disinformation to your state and local election officials.<\/li>\n<li class=\"graf graf--p\">Social network sites all provide ways to report disinformation.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/connecting-the-world-to-combat-coronavirus\/how-to-report-misinformation-online\">The World Health Organization has a page with links for how to report on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, TikTok and other sites<\/a>.\u00a0 The more people who report a post, the more likely it is that companies will fact-check it and potentially take it down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can also report disinformation to the candidates and parties being targeted.\u00a0\u00a0The Biden campaign has a reporting form at <a class=\"cu hi\" href=\"http:\/\/joe.link\/reportdisinfo\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">http:\/\/joe.link\/reportdisinfo<\/a>, and the Democratic National Committee has email reporting via <a class=\"cu hi\" href=\"mailto:disinfo@dnc.org\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">disinfo@dnc.org<\/a><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"graf graf--h3\">Join a grassroots disinfo-fighting campaign<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stoponlinevaw.com\/stop-digital-voter-suppression-project\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1430\" src=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/10\/SDVS-Logo-1024x448-1024x448.png\" alt=\"Stop Digital Voter Suppression (tm). Image: a red hand with an on\/off switch on the palm.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"448\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">As Kate Starbird and her research team at University of Washington pointed out a few years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3359229\">producing disinformation is a collaborative process<\/a>. And so is fighting back!<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">Fortunately, there are more and more grassroots projects where people work together as a team to monitor and respond to disinformation. Here\u2019s a few:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li class=\"graf graf--li\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/what-we-do\/join-common-causes-action-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/what-we-do\/join-common-causes-action-team\/\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">Common Cause\u2019s Action Team<\/strong><\/a> focuses on election-related disinformation.
