{"id":191,"date":"2008-08-12T15:52:02","date_gmt":"2008-08-12T22:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?page_id=191"},"modified":"2008-08-12T15:52:02","modified_gmt":"2008-08-12T22:52:02","slug":"professional-bio","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/2024.thenexus.today\/index.php\/professional-bio\/","title":{"rendered":"Professional bio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Update, 2018: See my new improved bio on <a href=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\/about\/\">achangeiscoming.net<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Photo Sharing\" href=\"http:\/\/achangeiscoming.net\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7031\/6433069909_b78f6e7092.jpg\" alt=\"2011-11-30_1419\" width=\"265\" height=\"209\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m a software engineer \/ entrepreneur \/ strategist who spends most of my time in the Seattle area, San Francisco, and cyberspace..\u00c2\u00a0 Currently I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m Tech DIVA (Technical Diversity, Inclusion, and Values Advisor) at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.o.school\/\">O.school<\/a>, and architect at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optyva.com\/\">OPTYVA<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I also develop the <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/a-change-is-coming\/diversity-friendly-software-at-sxsw-2017-references-c0ca05a191a6\">diversity-friendly<\/a> open-source social network platform <a href=\"http:\/\/stream.tapestrymaker.net\/2014\/welcome-to-the-tapestrymaker-blog\">TapestryMaker<\/a>, and consult for and advise tech companies interested in diversity and\/or software engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Previous work includes<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>running an international 60-person engineering and product management organizations as Senior VP of Products at Accellion<\/li>\n<li>leading the Ad Astra (Analysis and Development of Awesome STRAtegies) project as General Manger for Strategy Development in Microsoft\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Online Services Group<\/li>\n<li>creating the static analysis tools PREfix and PREfast as founder and CTO of venture-funded startup Intrinsa (acquired by Microsoft in 1999) and then at Microsoft Research.<\/li>\n<li>security planning and company-wide culture change with the Windows Security Push and XPSP2 task forces<\/li>\n<li>co-founding Qworky, a Seattle-area startup developing an intelligent platform for &#8220;meetings that don&#8217;t suck&#8221;, with Mikal Lewis and Sally Abrolous<\/li>\n<li>co-chairing the Northwest Entreprenuers&#8217; Network&#8217;s First-Look Forum pitch competition (with Rebecca Lovell and Rochelle Whalen)<\/li>\n<li>chairing the ACM conference on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfp2010.org\/\">Computers, Freedom, and Privacy in a Network Society<\/a>, where we developed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/breaking-news\/ci_15326665\">a social network users&#8217; bill of rights<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the National Academies\/CSTB software dependability panel <em>Sufficient Evidence? <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a researcher, my overarching interest is re-imagining <a href=\"http:\/\/talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=113\">computer science as a social science<\/a>. Some of the social science approaches I&#8217;ve explored include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=156\">asset-based thinking<\/a>, narratology, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=1699\">emotional software<\/a>, cognitive diversity and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=687\">evolution<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=687\">intersectionality<\/a>, standpoint theories and situated knowledge, oppression theory, action research, and <a title=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=90\" href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=90\">hot pink beanbag chairs<\/a>. Sarah Blankinship and I applied this perspective to computer security in a succession of papers and presentations.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/talesfromthe.net\/?p=687\">Guys talking to guys who talk about guys<\/a> looks at diversity-oriented business strategies, communication, innovation, and software experience; <a href=\"http:\/\/opensourcebridge.org\/sessions\/1311\">Towards Diversity-Friendly Open Source Networks<\/a> (2014, with Deborah Pierce) and <a href=\"http:\/\/stream.tapestrymaker.net\/2015\/building-diverse-social-networks-a-presentation-at-osb15-with-lynncyrin\">Building Diverse Social Networks<\/a> (2015, with Lynn Cyrin) look at communication technologies.<\/p>\n<p>With my activist hat on, I was a board member with the Bill of Rights Defense Committee from 2011 to 2014.\u00c2\u00a0 Earlier, I focused on social network activism as one of the organizers of Get FISA Right; working with Baratunde Thurston and Tracy Viselli on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/10\/27\/business\/worldbusiness\/27iht-27link.17266736.html\">Voter Suppression Wiki<\/a>, and a great team of people on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=242\">Twitter Vote Report<\/a>; and starting #p2 (the largest progressive hashtag on Twitter) with Tracy.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=687\">Cognitive evolution and revolution<\/a> (from the opening plenary at Politics Online 2009), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=1113\">Social network activism and the future of civil liberties<\/a> (originally published on <em>Pam&#8217;s House Blend<\/em>) are good starting places; my <a href=\"http:\/\/talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?page_id=742\">recent writings on activism<\/a> page has a lot more links.<\/p>\n<p>As a writer, projects have included poetry on <em>E-luminatus; <\/em>blogging on <em><a title=\"Liminal States\" href=\"http:\/\/talesfromthe.net\/jon\" rel=\"nofollow\">Liminal States<\/a><\/em> and occasionally elsewhere; and a novel in progress about social networks, g0ddesses.net.<\/p>\n<p>You can reach me by email at jon@achangeiscoming.net, or social networks via\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/jdp23\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/u\/0\/115324919838980591640\">Google+<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/diasp.org\/u\/jdp23\">Diaspora *<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.new.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=623727023\">Facebook<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jdp23\">LinkedIn<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.free-association.net\/index.php?option=com_faprofile&amp;user=454\">free-association<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update, 2018: See my new improved bio on achangeiscoming.net!
