Testing out TweetSuite

I’m testing out Dan Zarella’s TweetSuite, which includes Tweetbacks and a Tweet This button.

Unfortunately, according to the comments here, it apparently only works on posts that have been created since the plugin has been installed.    So I’m creating this post to test things out.

We shall see …

  1. The Tweeting now seems to work … will the Tweetback make it here automagically? The suspense is killing me!

Not sure about the Tweet button. How’s anybody supposed to know what it means? So I’ll probably disable it.

  2. hmm. no tweetbacks, apparently.

Actually thinking more about this, the usability issue of having the “be the first to tweet this post” link on all my old posts where it doesn’t work is pretty severe. Several people brought this up in the thread on Dan’s blog but he hasn’t responded (which I have to say creates an impression of somebody who doesn’t care about his users).

oh well. it’s an interesting idea. better luck next time.

  3. BTW, here’s what I Tweeted.

Testing out TweetSuite http://tinyurl.com/ad8b44 … hmm, not bad, although i’d prefer to be able to choose another shortener …

The reason I’d prefer another shortener is that tinyurl.com’s links are 6 or 7 characters longer than is.gd, but it’s not the end of the world. It’s the usability problems that might cause me to disable it.

  4. A little programming let me work around the issue. I added the line

    if ($postID < 364) return $content;

near the top of the addTweetBacks function so that things only show up on this post or later. It'll probably break when I get an update but'll let me experiment for now.

I wonder what people who aren't professional software engineers are supposed to do?

Unfortunately I appear to have clobbered my sidebar layout in an attempt to show my recent Tweets (not TweetSuite's fault) and so some more editing will be required. Sheesh.

  5. The sidebar’s in better shape now … although I still no TweetBacks 🙁

  6. @laxpat916 included the link to this post in a tweet, but it didn’t show up here. Sigh.

Meanwhile, I left a comment on another thread on Dan’s blog, responding to his request for feedback and asking a question. I was rewarded with some form mail encouraging me to subscribe to his mailing list and follow him on Twitter … but he didn’t bother to reply in the thread. Hmm. I wonder if he’s aware what kind of message this sends?

  7. I followed @danzarrella on Twitter. He didn’t follow me back.

  8. I too am having the same problem getting these tweetbacks to work… but I really like his software package… hopefully he will come back and say why, but at least your not alone!
