“Liminal states”

I’ve been looking around for the right title for the blog.  The initial working title was “Transitions (for the time being)” — “Transitions” being the closest word I had come up with so far, and completely in sync with my mindset as I was setting things up here, but probably not the title I’d want longer term.

Toying with the idea of something based on bardo, which is something that really resonates for me right now, I looked it up on Wikipedia and was rewarded with

The Tibetan word Bardo means literally “intermediate state” – also translated as “transitional state” or “in-between state” or “liminal state”. In Sanskrit the concept has the name antarabhāva.

Yeah.  That’ll work. At least for the time being.

  1. I can provide a more detailed discourse on Bardo if needed. ;b
One aspect of Bardo that I don’t think applies is that bardo beings are not in control of their experience or their next rebirth. Karma that ripens at the time of death determines those things.
I expect your transition will be somewhat thoughtful and directed. 🙂

  2. A more detailed discourse would be appreciated. Most of my (limited) understanding comes from Francesca Fremantle’s Luminous Emptiness (which focuses specifically on the Tibetan Book of the Dead) Dzogchen Ponlop’s Mind Beyond Death. It seems to me that both of them emphasize that bardo beings have substantial *influence* over their next rebirth, karma of course also being a factor but not fully deterministic.

In any case I am indeed trying to be thoughtful and directed about transitions. Good advice for all of us!
